Yongyi Mao, Ph.D.

Yongyi Mao is an Associate Professor at the University of Ottawa, School of Information Technology and Engineering (SITE).

Yongyi obtained his Bachelor of Engineering degree in Biomedical Engineering in 1992, at the Southeast University, Nanjing, China. In 1995, he obtained a Bachelor of Medicine degree in Nanjing Medical University, Nanjing, China. Declining an offer as a cardiologist in a provincial hospital in Nanjing, Yongyi came to Canada on a student visa and continued his study in the Department of Medical Biophysics at the University of Toronto, where he obtained a Master of Science degree in 1998. In 2003, Yongyi obtained his PhD degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of Toronto. Immediately after completing his Ph.D. program in Toronto, Yongyi declined the prestigious NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship and joined the University of Ottawa as a faculty member at SITE.

Having a versatile background, Yongyi directs his research group -- IMPACT Lab in a wide spectrum of research areas, ranging from signal, image and video processing, to machine learning, statistical inference and information theory, to commnications, error control coding and data compression, and to various areas of computational biology.
