longitudinal wave periodic motion A wave vibrating along the direction of propagation.

standing wave stationary wave A pattern of oscillations in space in which the regions of maximum displacement and of zero displacement (the nodes) remain fixed in position. This pattern is formed when two waves of the same amplitude and frequency move simultaneously through a medium in opposite directions.
