galaxy motion comparison table
Subject has definition
galactic rotationThe revolving of a galaxy round its central nucleus even as it continues its proper motion. Such rotation, however, is not uniform but differential. One revolution of the Sun within our own Galaxy takes about 225 million years, or 1 cosmic year.
Hubble flowThe movement of the galaxies away from us caused by the expansion of the Universe.
large-scale motionsBulk motions of distant galaxies deviating from the Hubble flow.
Virgo infallThe observed gravitational motion of nearby galaxies toward the Virgo cluster of galaxies, about 50 million light years away. The Virgo cluster represents a strong concentration of mass, a strong departure from a uniform distribution of matter, and it therefore causes galaxies in its vicinity to deviate from the Hubble flow.
