[*] This research is supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. Innumerable thanks to Li Xiaobin, whose work has laid foundations for the algorithm described in this paper; the paper is based on a conference publication (X. Li, S. Szpakowicz, S. Matwin, "A WordNet-based Algorithm for Word Sense Disambiguation". Proc IJCAI-95, 1368-1374.). Thanks to Terry Copeck for all the help with WordNet. Thanks to Jean-François Delannoy for help with rating verb-noun pairs.

[1] "Coordinate sisters" in WordNet terminology.

[2] In most cases, this is a single noun, but we also consider fixed domain-specific expressions such as "real estate".

[3] According to our general definition of semantic similarity, two verbs are similar if they are in the same synset, one of them is a hypernym of the other, or they are siblings.

[4] For the testing of our algorithm such places have been located in the parse trees in advance, at the same time as noun-verb pairs and coordinate verb groups for use with HR5.

[5] This version of the algorithm has not been tried yet.
