- Introduction
In this page you will find tips on how to configure your mail client to send and receive email
via SITE's email server.
SITE's previous mail server refused to relay messages for users located outside of SITE. However, the new server
which was made available in January of 2007 will allow SITE users to send mail from anywhere provided their mail client
can do authenticated and encrypted SMTP.
Please note: SITE's mail server supports both the POP and IMAP protocols. However, IMAP is the protocol
SITE IT support staff recommend for SITE users.
- Password
To be able to login to SITE's email server (courriel.site.uOttawa.ca), you must have run autopass
at least once since June of 2006. If you haven't done so, or if you're unable to login to the mail server, go to
- http://www.site.uOttawa.ca/autopass
and follow the instructions to ensure all your SITE account passwords are set and synchronized. Your passwords should be
set on all SITE systems within 5 minutes of your completing this step.
- Client configuration
The following sections contain instructions how to configure email clients supported by SITE IT support staff.
- Outlook 2003 SP2
Please note: Outlook Express which comes for free with Windows XP is not capable of authenticated
SMTP connections. SITE IT Support recommends you use Outlook 2003 instead. Also note, Outlook 2003 requires Service Pack 2
and all updates in order to work with the configuration given below. If you have outlook 2003, please visit the link below using
Internet Explorer to make sure you are up to date:

* If your version of Outlook is not 2003 with Service Pack 2 or later, then port 587 will not work.
If your PC is on campus, you can set your Outgoing Server port to 25 with SSL turned off instead. If you're using a laptop,
