The Essay and the final presentation

How it works:

  1. Everybody must individually do an essay.
     
  2. Everybody must do a presentation in groups of two.
     
  3. For each of the above you must choose among the topics, listed below, which are in nine groups. Some topics are designated for CSI, some for SEG, some for ELG and some for two or all courses (see in Blackboard to determine this).
     
    • - For each work item (essay, presentation) you must chose from a different topic group (1-9).
       
    • - There are about 80 total topics. You must sign up for a topic in Blackboard. It is first-come-first served. For the presentation, you must sign up with a partner. Initially, just signup for the essays will be allowed; signup for presentations will follow later.
       
    • - If you haven't chosen an essay topic by Feb 6th, one will be randomly assigned. If you haven't chosen a presentation topic and partner by Feb 27th, one will be randomly assigned.
       
  4. Essay and presentation guidance;

    • - For the essay, minimum pages: 7, maximum: 10
       
    • - For presentations, you have 10 minutes: Be concise; about 10 slides would be ideal.
       
  5. Remember, plagiarism in any form will be dealt with very severely: You will almost certainly fail the course, since the course is about professionalism.
     
  6. Always use multiple sources, including primary and secondary references. Avoid Wikipedia as a main reference. Follow the guidelines to be given in class by the librarian regarding the tool to use for references.
     
  7. Synthesize from the sources, and inject your own opinion.
     
  8. You may narrow the topic and change the title somewhat. Just stick reasonably close to the selected topic or a subtopic of it. Depth is better than shallowness in this work.
     
  9. For the essay, you will hand in a draft and the list of references following the instructions from the librarian at the first deadline. The librarian TAs will at this stage primarily be verifying that you have established an outline, written 2-3 pages and have found a reasonable set of references, and formulated them correctly (with a link to your refworks page).

    Hint: Focus on wind, solar, hydroelectric. Issues include market distortion caused by government subsidies and feed-in-tariffs.
     
  • 3C. Environmental issues with renewable energy: Striking a balance
    Hint: Issues include land use, the need for transmission lines, environment damage from new hydroelectric dams
     
  • 3D. Energy storage: A huge barrier to a sustainable energy future
    Hint: Discuss the various forms of storage, and which have the most promise in various applications.
     
  • 3E. How far are we from a future powered by nuclear fusion?
    Hint: Summarize several articles, and compare the projections. Discuss the key problems
     
  • 3F. Which energy solution will win to fuel our automobiles: Batteries, ethanol or hydrogen fuel cells?
