INTRODUCTION

Simulation is a multifaceted discipline and a key enabling technology for hundreds of application areas. Simulation is used to gain experience in several types of training (e.g., live, virtual, or constructive simulations). For tasks other than training (e.g., prediction of behavior or performance; evaluation of alternative models, parameters, experimental conditions, or policies; testing of hypothesis; planning; engineering design, virtual prototyping; or understanding) simulation is used to perform experiments. For this major type of use, simulation is goal-directed experimentation with dynamic models.

The dictionary is organized in three parts.

English terms provide a systematic inventory of the M&S concepts. They are also used to collect together relevant concepts. For example, after the term “variable” about 100 terms related with variables, mostly denoting types of variables are listed.  Similarly, the terms data, error, model, simulation –to name a few– are followed by terms representing several types of them. It is also expected that English terms will be useful for the Modeling and Simulation Body of Knowledge.

The French-English M&S terms constitute the first such dictionary. My colleagues who contributed to its realization and I hope it will be useful to many francophone simulationists. Having been honored to be the plenary speaker in one of the early French simulation conferences (MOSIM, June 1997, in Rouen, France –sponsored by AFCET, FRANCOSIM, SCS), where I presented “Intelligence artificielle et simulation,” I am glad, this time, to be in a position to contribute to the French language in a more fundamental way.

This dictionary could not have been prepared and published without the dedicated contribution of many colleagues that constituted the French Team, i.e., Drs. Lucile Torres, Frédéric Amblard, Raphaël Duboz, David Hill, Jean Caussanel, Aziz Naamane, Erwan Tranvouez, Jean-Pierre Belaud, Olivier Dalle, Alain Ferrarini, Claudia Frydman, and Pierre Siron. Two Ph.D. students, El-Amine Maâmar Hamri and Gregory Zacharewicz were also very helpful in the final stage of the preparation of the dictionary. I also acknowledge the contributions of the institutions of the members of the French Team, i.e., CERT-ONERA, INRIA, IRD, IRIT, LGC, LIMOS, LSIS, and VERSIM. The financial supports of the CNRS and LSIS, for the publication of the dictionary, are gratefully acknowledged.

Professors Norbert Giambiasi and Claudia Frydman, both from LSIS have been very supportive when we discussed the possibility of cooperation on this project on September 2004. Since November 2004, I corresponded with Dr. Lucile Torres who coordinated the activities of the French Team. Dr. Jean Caussanel graciously prepared the many Visual Basic macros to process the dictionary files.

We have the following plan for the next edition of the dictionary:

•   English terms will be revised to assure completeness and relevancy to M&S.

•   French and Turkish terms will be revised for any possible error and French and Turkish terms will be added for the new English terms. We hope that the French terms will also be useful in expanding the dictionary with other Roman languages, such as Spanish and Italian that we aim to work on.

Last but not least, I would like to acknowledge that this dictionary is a product of the cooperation made possible within The McLeod Modeling and Simulation Network (M&SNet) of the SCS. The French section of the current version is realized with the cooperation of fourteen individual members of LSIS and VERSIM –two  member organizations of the M&SNet. For the preparation of the Spanish and Italian sections of the future version, the Directors of the Spanish and Italian member organizations of the M&SNet, namely, Modeling & Simulation of Dynamic Systems (CEA-IFAC Spanish Thematic Group) and the McLeod Institute of Simulation Sciences (MISS) already promised to join forces for this multicultural project. For the above activities, additional teams of knowledgeable and willing colleagues will be established.

Any suggestion/recommendation to improve the future version of the M&S dictionary will be greatly appreciated.

PREFACE

Norbert Giambiasi, Ph.D.

Director of LSIS
