Partial Word Sense Tagger # 2: Selectional Restrictions
LDOCE assigns semantic classes such as Human, Plant, Solid, etc. for each noun word sense. Adj., Adv., and V list the expected class of the words they modify or their complements. E.g., the verb “eat” should have a “living” subject and a “food” complement.
The LDOCE classes were organized as a hierarchy by [Bruce & Guthrie, 1992].
The restriction resolution algorithm chooses the set of dictionary senses that do not break the constraints observed in the context of the ambiguous word (i.e., as long as the semantic class is the one appearing in the definition or appearing below that class in the hierarchy, a dictionary sense can be chosen). Results: 44% accuracy.
