Analysis of the Task
Different lexical knowledge sources are useful for Word Sense Disambiguation in different ways:
- Filtering: Certain sources are useful for discriminating between senses that are correct in context and senses that are not.
- Partial Taggers: Certain sources are able to suggest senses that may be correct.
The sense tagger described in this paper makes use of several modules which perform disambiguation, each being either a filter or a partial tagger.
The system also uses the Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English (LDOCE) as a source of knowledge.
