Award

My Master’s thesis with the title “Design and Development of P2P Multilingual Collaborative Multimedia Tool” was nominated as the “BEST THESIS” from the School of Information Technology and Engineering of University of Ottawa.

Abstract

"With the technological advancements, both client-server-based and fully decentralized collaborations are gaining popularity. Throughout the last decade, many collaborative tools have emerged based on the former technology or in some cases a combination of both technologies, which is often called hybrid collaboration system. The need for fully decentralized or Peer-to-Peer (P2P) collaboration over the Internet is increasing nowadays. Moreover, due to the rapid growth of multimedia technology over the web, more and more P2P Environments are adopting numerous multimedia applications such as audio, video, text, etc. to enhance the quality of collaboration. However, there are many factors that make this task challenging. These factors include not only the limited bandwidth (especially of peers having dialup connections), the presence of firewalls, proxy servers and Network Address Translation (NAT’s) in Intranets, but also how to efficiently design such a fully decentralized system that supports different multimedia. A flexible architecture needs to be defined that overcomes these problems and permits a smooth and rich collaborative multimedia environment that would satisfy the needs of end users. This thesis illustrates the architecture, design and implementation of a fully decentralized collaborative multimedia system called PECOLE (PEer-to-peer COLlaborative Environment). PECOLE supports real-time collaboration and provides the following collaborative facilities: 1) Shared browsing 2) Multilingual collaboration 3) Shared telepointer 4) Moderation 5) Multipoint-to-multipoint audio/video conferencing and 6) Chat. "

MCRLab Browser

It is a java based lightweight OS independent browser.

LORNET

LORNET is an NSERC funded project. I was responsible to design a 3D authoring tool called LORNAV (Learning Object Repository Navigation and Authoring in Virtual Environment), which is a 3D browser-based application for authoring the Learning Objects stored in distributed repositories. BEST

BEST is a CANARIE project. BEST stands for « Banc d’Essai de Services de liaisons optiques pour un environnement de Téléformation doctorale », which means « Testbench of Optical networking for PhD Teletraining »; its subtitle is : “Where E-learning meets E-science”. The goal of the project is to foster the training of highly qualified professionals and researchers by improving the connectivity for PhD students, and prepare them to become E-scientists. BEST structures high performance services for students and professors, as well as access to worldwide scientific communities, to documentation and instrumentation, thanks to high-technology connectivity. By allowing the immersion of students into an optimal environment, this project will benefit, to Canadian universities and to the national economy. It uses the Internet2 gigabit infrastructure for high speed research network. My responsibility was to design and configure the Internet2 VLAN between UBC, TELUQ and University of Ottawa.

Secure SMIL

Secure SMIL (SYNCHRONIZED MULTIMEDIA INTEGRATION LANGUAGE) protoype ensures that an online document cannot be claimed by anyone else except its owner. It‘s a Service Oriented Watermark generation and verification of aggregated Learning Objects over the web. It basically takes a SMIL file as an input, watermarks on the fly with a userprovided pass phrase and stores a copy in the server in addition to providing a copy to the owner. In case anybody alters any portion of a document, it can be checked online where the document is submitted to the server along with its passphrase (we assume that the passphrase is not compromised). The demo is available on request.

SENORA

SENORA is an open hardware and software architecture for the cooperative coordination of multiple heterogeneous mobile robots operating in a common environment. It is designed to meet the stringent requirements of modern loosely coupled multi-robot architectures, such as flexibility, reliability, and fault-tolerance. As such, the proposed architecture enables the robots to cope with the ubiquitous presence of various types of uncertainties in their operating environments. SENORA is a fully autonomous and scalable sensory-based P2P framework. It also offers a real-time inter-robot communication protocol and it is based on the state-of-the-art P2P technology, which is specifically designed to satisfy the requirements of physical sensory data publishing and fusion. This architecture is implemented and evaluated on a team of indoor mobile robots. The test results manifest the architecture’s distinguished features and capabilities. SENORA Architecture

UbiLearn

The Multimedia Communications Research Laboratory (MCRLab) of the University of Ottawa demonstrated a novel personalized collaborative e- learning system called “UbiLearn” at Cebit 2005. held on March 10 - 16, 2005, in Hanover, Germany. MCRLab’s booth was at Hall 9, Stand B29 (Canada's Future Parc Pavilion) supported by the Canadian Embassy in Germany.
