Course Outline:
Week 1 Optical fibers, fiber dispersion (modal dispersion, chromatic dispersion and polarization mode dispersion), fiber loss and nonlinearity (stimulated Brillouin scattering, stimulated Raman scattering, self-phase and cross-phase modulation, four-wave mixing)
Week 2 Optical sources (semiconductor lasers, light emitting diodes), optical modulators (electrooptic modulators, optical absorption modulators), photodetectors (PIN diodes, and Avalanche diodes)
Week 3 Fiber Bragg gratings (uniform and chirped fiber Bragg gratings), Arrayed waveguide, and other passive components (Couplers, circulators)
Week 4 Radio over fiber network architectures
Week 5 Radio signal transmission over fiber
Week 6 Photonic true-time delay beamforming architecture
Week 7 Optical generation of microwave signals
Week 8 Photonics digital converters, optoelectronic processors
Week 9 Optical domain microwave filtering
Week 10 All-optical microwave signal up- and down- conversions
