Introduction to biophotonics

The course is intended as an introduction to biophotonics. The course encompasses the fundamentals and various applications involving the integration of light, photonics and biology into biophotonics. The objective is to provide a basic knowledge of a broad range of topics so that students can rapidly acquire the necessary background for research and development in this multi-disciplinary field. 

 

Course outline:

 

Fundamentals of biophotonics:

• Introduction to biophotonics (Lecture1)
• Fundamentals of Light and matter (Lecture 2)
• Basics of biology (Lecture 3)
• Fundamentals of Light-Matter interaction (Lecture 4)
• Principles of lasers and Non-linear optics (Lecture 5)
• Photobioplogy (Lecture 6)
• Mid-term (lecture 7)

 

Applications of biophotonics:

• Principles and techniques of bioimaging (Lecture 8,9)
• Photodynamic therapy (Lecture 10)
• Laser tweezers and laser scissors (lecture 11& 12)

 

 

Grading: In-class quiz and assignments (20%), midterm (20%), final exam (30%), and a final project (30%). The final project will be a written report on a research topic. The report will require a survey of the topic and directions for new research.
