Numerical Expressions

Symbols

Symbols or operators are used to indicate addition (+), subtraction (-), multiplication (×), and division (÷). These symbols are also used in algebra. In a series of operations, multiplication and division (× and ÷) are done first in the order they occur in the expression left to right. Addition and subtraction (+ and -) are done next in the order they occur in the expression left to right.

Absolute Value

The absolute value of a signed number is the number without the sign. The absolute value of a number is indicated by placing a vertical bar on either side of the number, as for |A| for the quantity A.

Multiplying with Signed Numbers

When we multiply two numbers together, we form a product. The numbers used to form the product are called the factors of the product.

Dividing with Signed Numbers

In arithmetic, division is indicated by the division symbol (÷). In algebra, division is indicated as a fraction.
